HANES SOCK DRIVE 2024
Near the end of last year, With Actions and in Truth, Inc. received an offer to renew its partnership with HanesBrand for their 2024 Hanes Sock Drive. The e-mail from HanesBrand Team Coordinator Nina McMorrow truly made my day, as we had not partnered with Hanes since 2021. We immediately accepted the invitation and received an in-kind donation of 1,000 pairs of socks to support those who are homeless or facing housing insecurity (i.e. living in shelters).
Throughout December 2024 and early January 2025, we were able to complete our distribution; to homeless individuals in southeast Queens and midtown Manhattan, and to a few Queens-based shelters. Per the latter, we reached out to some of my contacts from the places we distributed Hanes socks to in 2021. I was pleasantly surprised they were still employed there and that they remembered me. First up was J-CAP and their Recreational Specialist, Ray Perez. He is always a pleasure to deal with because he takes care of business in rapid-fire time. Thus, it was good to be able to provide them with 150 pairs of men’s socks.
I was happy to have a reason to get back in touch with the Briarwood Family Residence, a family shelter where we had sandwich package distributions once a month back in 2016 and 2017. Most of the residents at this facility are women and children, but I was recently told there are a surprising number of men. I still have a special place in my heart for Briarwood, so I’m glad we were able to drop off nearly 400 pairs of men’s, women’s and children’s socks to them.
Alfredo “Freddy” Matthews, the Assistant Vice President at Acacia Network, a community-based organization with ties in Queens, was very instrumental in putting us in touch with some Jamaica, Queens-based hotels-turned-shelters a few years ago. We couldn’t reach out to everyone, but were able to re-connect with the folks at the JFK Holiday Inn men’s shelter near the airport and deliver just under 250 pairs of men’s socks.
It was only in early January 2025 that I became aware of a non-profit organization, Jamaica Community Partnership, that is doing considerable outreach in southeast Queens. I reached out to their Director, Alexia Myers-Hinds. Who accepted our offer of the remaining 110 pairs of men’s socks for their upcoming Can You Feel the Love 2025 event that will distribute food, clothing children’s recreational items, and community resources to those in need.
Having done so privately, I would again like to publicly thank HanesBrands, Inc. for the honor to partner with them a third time for their 2024 Hanes Sock Drive. I eagerly look forward to partnering with them again later this year.
